Introduction to Interpretive Landscape Painting
Lesure Village June 12 to June 13th 10 am to 4 pm
Landscape painting serves as an eloquent medium through which artists express their personal interpretations of nature. The art of interpretive landscape painting enables individuals to go beyond mere representation of their surroundings, allowing for a more emotional and subjective experience. If you have an interest in exploring this captivating art form, join us at Leisure Village from June 12 to 13, where we will delve into the nuances of interpreting photo references to develop your unique creative style.
Supplies Needed for the Workshop
The materials needed are a listed below:
1. Table top easel
2. Two 11” x 14” canvas paper, canvas board or stretched canvas. A couple of other canvas surface to do some experimenting on. Board, paper or stretched canvas.
3. Three to four brush sizes from about 1”, ¾”, ½”and ¼” wide. They should be long handle. Brush shapes come in Flat, Bright and Filbert. Any of these brush shapes are fine. I can explain more about that in the workshop.
4. Paint color include:
a. Yellow light or medium
b. Yellow Ochre
c. Burnt Sienna
d. Alizarin Crimson
e. Ultramarine blue
f. Sap, Hookers or viridian green
g. Phthalo Blue if you have it
h. Titanium White
5. Low order Solvent such as Gamsol for oil paint
6. Fast drying medium such as Liquin, Galkyd get, Galkyd light
7. Small container for the solvent
8. Palette to mix paint on. Paper, wood or glass palette. I will be working on a 12” x 16” palette. I will show you a mixing system based on the 12” x 16” palette. If you don’t have this I will bring material to create a palette in this dimension to class. If you work in acrylic you need a paper palette.
9. Pencil for drawing on the canvas. I softer pencil (4 to 8b) is better, but a no. 2 pencil will work. If you use charcoal , that can work as well. Kneaded eraser.
10. A small simple sketch book for sketches and notes.
11. If you have a role of tape, bring it. I will have some also.
Harvey Cusworth Artist/Instructor
Harvey Cusworth is a California artist who specializes in the plein air style of painting. Primarily painting in oil, he tries to capture the colors revealed through California's unique light. Among his favorite subject matters are the landscapes of the Santa Monica Mountains. His paintings reflect images from impressive park vistas to the dynamic Pacific coastline.
Harvey has a bachelor's degree from Brigham Young University and a Masters in Fine Arts, with a painting and drawing emphasis, from California State University, Long Beach. He has won numerous awards at juried shows, including Best of Show in the Foundation for Education of the Arts exhibition.
During his career, he has also taught art in both public and private settings. Currently Mr. Cusworth is recently retired as a high school painting and drawing instructor focusing on AP studio art courses. Courses and technique taught to students included acrylic painting, pastels, drawing media, color pencils and collage.
